r1086 r1281 38 38

r1280 r1281 11 11

-Stanzer verarbeitet. r864 r1281 78 78 three points determined by triangulation took about 3 to 4 minutes of 79 79 computer time.

80 The restauration will commence in the following months. Stay tuned as81 we will write about this work in progress.82 80 81 82
83 84 85
86
LGP-30 Magnetic Drum. The magnetic layer has some defects.
The photo can be enlarge.
87

88 89

90 91
Now the restoration of this vaccum tube based computer started. The biggest 92 problem is the magnetic drum memory. Currently four options are under 93 consideration:
94 95 1. Applying a new magnetic coating to the damaged drum. This approach would 96 be ideal but also the most complex solution.
97 98 2. Simulating the complete drum assembly by a modern microcontroller. 99 Attaching this to the vacuum tube electronics would be feasible by means of 100 level shifters (0V and -20V are required for operation).
101 102 3. A discrete approach emplying RAMs, EPROMs, operational amplifiers and lots 103 of glue logic. This does not have any advantages over approach 2.
104 105 4. Replacing the rotating drum by a fixed assembly holding magnetic 106 read/write heads, one for each head of the drum. This approach has been 107 abandoned due to its complexity.

108 109 Compared with the complexity of emulating the drum assembly, the missing 110 cables are only a minor problem. Fortunately four experts will support the 111 restoration effort. We would especially like to thank Mr. Klemens Krause 112 <a href="http://computermuseum.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/"target="_blank">Computermuseum-Stuttgart. 113 114 -

r712 r1281 101 101 working as a punched card computer.
102 102 The next project will be the restauration of the 2310 disk drive. Unfortunately we have no spare hard sectored removeable disks with eight sectors for this drive. All we have are hard sectored disks with 16 sectors. Accordingly we will try to convert one of these to eight 103 sectors by masking every second index slot. 103 sectors by masking every second index slot.

104 104 105
This section will be gradually continued.
105 10.07.2016: Finally we found time to repair the 2310 disk drive. After 106 replacing a 16 bit buffer register it works like a charm. We already compiled 107 some FORTRAN programs which ran flawlessly. This completes the restoration of 108 this unique machine which is now fully operational again.

106 109 110 29.01.2017: We managed to repair the paper tape readers for the 1130. By now 111 we can load the ASCII picture "SNOOPY" from paper tape and print it. The 112 machine can also punch arbitrary data to tape with by means of a program 113 written in FORTRAN and assembly language. This program occupies 392 punch 114 cards. Now only the plotter needs to be connected to the machine.

115 116
117 -
